With its endless colorful lights, flashing billboards, crowded streets and never-ending bustle, Tokyo is a very special city to discover by night. It can be a special time when the modernity of this country blends in with the ancient traditions of this people, and when the sense of shyness of the people disappears after a few drinks.
“The New Division” did an outstanding job at portraying their impression of a night in one of the greatest cities in the world with their recent tune, One Night in Tokyo.
The sound and feel of the track is modern and direct, yet it feels charmingly retro, with a distinctive 80s feel.
The layers of synthesizers and the beat patterns make me think of artists such as Depeche Mode, while the melodic approach has a slightly moodier vibe, which brings me back to the work of bands such as New Order or The Cure.
All of these great 80s influences are re-designed are re-invented in a stunning modern way, giving the New Division a perfect balance between familiarity and innovation.
This is a track that could fit well as a part of the soundtrack of “Lost In Translation” – Just look at the Tokyo Nightlife scenes and tell me this song wouldn’t be an absolutely perfect match to those unique aesthetics!
The New Division is the alias of Los Angeles based electronic musician/producer John Glenn Kunkel. Being one of the most important acts in the new wave electro synth genre, The New Division has released three critically acclaimed albums and four EPs, as well as numerous remixes and productions. Kunkel has found success being featured in high profile publications such as Pitchfork and the Guardian and amassing millions of plays on Spotify.

The melancholy lyrics are a perfect juxtaposition to the bright, danceable electronic beats and guitar heavy rhythms.
