Creative Industry professionals Paula Akpan and Nicole Crentsil have produced an event that showcases London’s talented creative community of British black women and girls. The theme for the Black Girl Festival 2019 is ‘Taking Up Space.’ It will address ways to break down institutional barriers and gain access to the upper echelons of business and management. From tech, literature to hair and beauty, they champion inclusivity and rightly encourage women of color to excel across various industries.
The Black Girl Festival is the brainchild of Paula and Nicole. Paula Akpan is the co-founder of the ‘I’m Tired Project’, an award-winning social media photography campaign and workshop program, and social media coordinator for gal-dem, an online and print magazine comprised entirely of women of color. Paula is particularly passionate about issues affecting black gay women and non-binary people.
Nicole Crentsil is the founder and curator of Unmasked Women, an exhibition channeling the black female experience through creatives with a focus on mental health. Since her successful exhibition in September 2016, Nicole has curated an exhibition at the V&A, spoke at TEDxUCLWomen, curated a panel discussion at Tate Britain and co-founded BabyGirl Brunch, an initiative to support 16-21-year-old black girls.
Both are passionate about celebrating and championing black women and wanted to create a festival that showcases London’s talented black female creative community. The event takes from 10 am to 6 pm at Business Design Centre 52 Upper Street, London N1 0QH
