Bre Kennedy and Tenille Townes

Bre Kennedy has always written like someone trying to save a light before it goes out. On “The Pen,” the acclaimed Nashville singer-songwriter turns that instinct into a full-bodied statement—stirring, steady, and quietly defiant—teaming up with award-winning songwriter Tenille Townes for a collaboration that feels less like a feature and more like two artists meeting at the same crossroads.

Co-written by Kennedy, Townes, and Ryan Youmans during a season of personal and professional transition for both women, “The Pen” was born from a shared truth that lands with particular weight in today’s music industry: even when the world is loud, even when life is messy, even when the ground keeps shifting beneath you—there is still one thing you can claim. The way you tell your story. The way you choose what comes next.

Arriving alongside a behind-the-scenes studio music video, “The Pen” carries an intimacy that doesn’t feel manufactured. It feels lived-in. Sonically, it’s built on an acoustic foundation—warm, rich undertones holding the center while Kennedy and Townes’ voices move toward each other with striking force. Their vocals don’t compete; they converge. Powerful, vulnerable, motivating, cathartic—what begins as close-up reflection gradually opens into something bigger, an emotionally expansive declaration of self-determination.

For Kennedy, the song continues the creative chapter she cracked open with The Alchemist (released January 30, 2026), and the single “Flowers in the Concrete” that followed on May 1. If those releases mapped the terrain of transformation, “The Pen” plants a flag in the ground: this is what it sounds like when an artist stops negotiating with her own narrative and starts reclaiming it—especially alongside a kindred voice who understands the cost of making art in public.

That kinship is part of what makes this collaboration hit as hard as it does. Kennedy and Townes first performed “The Pen” earlier this year at the sold-out release show for The Alchemist at Nashville’s The Blue Room. The response in the room—immediate, visceral—sparked the decision to return to the song in the studio and capture the chemistry they felt onstage. And Townes arrived in that studio not just as a celebrated songwriter, but as an artist in her own defining independent chapter, having just released her deeply personal album The Acrobat through her own Township Road Songs—entirely recorded, produced, mixed, and performed by Townes herself.

Their creative connection, though, started earlier. Kennedy and Townes first wrote together in 2025 and quickly discovered how parallel their paths had become: two artists navigating heartbreak, disappointment, and the realities of an ever-evolving industry—both pulled toward songwriting like a compass they couldn’t ignore, only to find that same devotion taking an emotional toll.

“When Tenille and I first wrote together, we realized how parallel our stories were as artists and as light seekers,” says Kennedy. “We had both spent years following this pull toward our craft, writing our stories as we walked them, and then things outside of our control started taking a toll on our hearts — heartbreak, letdowns, broken promises, the ever-changing music industry, and the truths of growing up and into ourselves. Our lights were flickering low when we met, and we realized that the one thing we still had control over was how we chose to write about it.”

That realization became “The Pen”—an intimate but defiant reminder that no matter what happens around you, you are not powerless inside your own life. You are still the author. You still get to decide what the next page says.

For Kennedy, the message is personal, but it’s also an offering—especially to anyone who has ever felt like their story was being edited by someone else’s expectations, someone else’s timeline, someone else’s version of who they should be.

“We wanted to sing this together as a reminder to ourselves, as independent artists, that we have the power in our hands to write our own story,” Kennedy adds. “The pen is in our hands.”
