Part of the 2022 Windrush film festival lineup includes Cassie Quarless and Usayd Younis’s 2016 documentary film ‘Generation Revolution’. The directors diligently follow several of London’s new generation of black and brown political activists, motivated by a desire for equality and a fairer future.   They embark on the rewarding but difficult path to social change.  This is a gripping and necessary documentary that follows two organizations- ‘The London Black Revs’ and ‘R Movement’ as they follow their respective trajectories whilst the world is responding to the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. With empathy and maturity, the filmmakers compose a multifaceted film that succinctly illustrates the successes and unforeseen challenges these motivated inspired, and inspiring young people face. It provides a well-rounded account of the qualities and flaws of organizations and the characters of the individuals that shape them. This is exemplary documentary filmmaking that records the activities of young black activists with a level of respect seldom seen in mainstream media.

It successfully shows some representatives of the young anti-establishment as the intelligent, articulate, ethical, and balanced individuals there are. Whilst the jury is out and political debate around ways to tackle institutional racism, discrimination, and equal rights continue, you can only admire and respect the passion, energy, and fortitude of the individuals documented. No doubt, there will be those who question the narrative from which the film is made but I commend Quarless and Younis for producing a fresh, fly-on-the-wall perspective. As referenced in the documentary, if you are black, you’re affected by, or just care about these issues,  I encourage you to watch it and contribute to this outgoing debate.
