World Heart Beat invites London music lovers to step into an intimate evening of boundary-pushing jazz and spoken-word artistry as The Filomena Campus Quartet takes the stage on Friday, 29 May at 7.30 pm—a performance that promises not just a concert, but a lived, theatrical journey through sound, story, and soul.
.
At the centre is Filomena Campus: an award-winning vocalist, lyricist, academic, and theatre maker whose work refuses to sit neatly inside any one genre. Sardinian-born and London-based, Campus is internationally celebrated for her eclectic blend of jazz, improvisation, and literature, delivered with a magnetic stage presence that has captivated audiences across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Recently honoured as a Cavaliera of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, she continues to build a legacy defined by fearless collaboration and artistic range—working alongside innovators such as Orphy Robinson, Cleveland Watkiss, Rowland Sutherland, Maggie Nicols, and the London Improvisers Orchestra, as well as fellow Sardinian luminaries Paolo Fresu, Gavino Murgia, and Antonello Salis.
.
This special performance offers a preview of the quartet’s forthcoming album, and there’s an added resonance to the night: audiences will experience the music live in the very space where it was recorded, bringing listeners closer to the raw atmosphere and immediacy that shaped the project. Expect a set that moves fluidly between improvised jazz textures and spoken-word storytelling, with the kind of emotional lift that feels both cinematic and deeply personal.
.
The programme features original multilingual compositions co-written with Steve Lodder and Charlie Pyne, alongside fresh arrangements drawn from Campus’ rich repertoire and international collaborations. A highlight of the evening will include a striking vocal solo interpretation of a classic by Jobim, reimagined through Campus’ distinctive lens—equal parts elegance, daring, and truth.
Joining Campus on stage are Steve Lodder (piano and keyboards), Rod Youngs (drums), and Charlie Pyne (double bass)—a lineup built for nuance, intensity, and spontaneous musical conversation. Together, they create a sound world where rhythm becomes narrative, melody becomes character, and every moment feels alive with possibility.
.
Doors open at 6:00 pm. For further information on the artist and the show, visit the World Heart Beat website.
