Hiraeth Productions Cyf and Screen Wizards Pictures have announced that their award-winning short film Something Pointless is pressing on with an increasingly impressive festival run, with its Maryland premiere set for the SilverVox Film & Music Festival this Friday 19th June.
.
At the heart of Something Pointless is a story that moves quietly, but lands heavily. The film follows the unexpected intergenerational bond between a lonely, bullied boy and an elderly man whose daily routine appears, at first glance, to be exactly what the title suggests: small, repetitive, and easily overlooked. But as their connection grows, that “pointless” ritual transforms into something else entirely — an unlikely act of defiance against insignificance, and a reminder that meaning isn’t always loud enough to announce itself.
.
.
The film’s emotional weight is matched by its growing critical momentum. Rotten Tomatoes critic Jeff York — a Chicago Indie Critics member and writer of The Establishing Shot — has already singled the short out as one to watch, noting: “As a critic who’s covered the Academy Award-nominated shorts for 15 years now, this one feels like a genuine contender…”
Directed by Asa Bailey (Silo, 100 Years of Solitude), Something Pointless brings together a cast that blends emerging talent with celebrated screen presence. Leo Harris (The Count of Monte Cristo, Lost Boys & Fairies) leads alongside BAFTA® winner Owen Teale (Game of Thrones, The Rig), six-time Olivier Award nominee and winner Sophie Thompson (Gosford Park, EastEnders), and SAG Award nominee Sule Rimi (The Day of the Jackal, Andor).
.
Written by Neil Graham and David Cormican, the film is based on Graham’s first-place-winning screenplay from the 2010 Canadian Short Screenplay Competition (CSSC). Since then, Something Pointless has built a steady reputation on the circuit, screening at festivals including the USA Film Festival and Yorkton Film Festival in Canada, and earning a nomination at Wales’ Carmarthen Bay Film Festival for the prestigious John Hefin Best Short Film Made in Wales Award.
More recently, the short has been collecting international wins — including Best Short Film at the 2026 Ideal International Film Festival (India) and the 2026 Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival (Greece), Best Picture at the 2026 East Village New York Film Festival, and Best Narrative Film at the 2026 Unseen Film Festival. For a film rooted in the quiet power of everyday life, its global reach is anything but small.
.
With upcoming screenings across the US and Europe, Something Pointless continues to prove that the most understated stories often travel the furthest, because they speak to something universal: the human need to be seen, and the unexpected ways we find our way back to mattering.
